My nemesis… the basement

Category: Ponderings            Wednesday, June 27, 2007 at 2:46 pm

So our finished basement is also a damp basement, which means the carpet is dank and stinky. We thought we solved the problem by pulling up the carpet and painting latex waterproofing on the floor, then deep cleaning the carpet, but it still stinks and we’re not convince the floor is going to stay 100% dry. Therefore, before Addie is old enough to play on the floor, we need to replace the carpet. I’ve been looking around at good basement floor replacements and have come across some neat products, but they are not cheap. Its looking like a $2000 project at a minimum, if we do the labor and leave the carpet on the stairs (which will look dumb - carpeted stairs between two “hardwood” flooring levels). Argh.. this would be so much easier if we had a fresh slate to start with (i.e. an unfinished basement) vs. fixing the problems of a bad finishing done by the previous owner.

To make matters worse we don’t exactly have any spare cash right now floating around for said project. In the past two weeks we have had the unexpected costs of a broken window and Zipy’s car “tune up” to the sum of about $1100. However, It looks like I will be working at least 20 hours a week starting early-mid July; so hopefully the added income can pay for the basement flooring and the new deck Zipy so desires. I’m sure I will have plenty more to say, if I have the time, once I start working said hours while tending to the babe. Good thing Addie has a newly retired Grandmother looking to hang out with a baby…I may need to recruit her!

You could always try calling my dad up… He installs floors… If I know anyone who probably has an idea on what to do with a problematic basement floor, he probably does. (And he’s beginning to act quasi-retired… someone needs to keep him busy. ;))

Also in other working randomness, one of my BarCamp acquaintances, Kelley, is trying to start some coworking space in Manchester, I don’t know what your working arrangements are going to be but I figured I’d mention it in case you needed somewhere to work that’s A. closer to Grandma’s than home. and B. is a place that isn’t home. Kelley’s got what she has for a vision for BetaSpace up here: http://coworking.pbwiki.com/Coworking+Manchester,+NH I guess her aim is to launch mid-July. I’m excited about it anyhow… Finally I get to be cool like the rest of the people I work with who live in the city. :D If you want, I can let you know more about that when I hear more…

And shortly after I posted that comment my mother came online so I IMed her the URI and had her ask my father what he thought…

The sentiment seemed to be that the best thing to do both for practicality and cost would be to rip up the carpet and any pad and tackless there might be, and then get some cheap carpet that you can have cut to the size of the room and just lay loose on the floor… That way if it does get wet and ruined, you’re not out all the money and all you have to do is roll up and remove if it does get ruined.

The other suggestion was to invest in a dehumidifier for the basement.

Thanks Nikki. We’re still trying to figure out the best approach to the basement, but its nice to get some advice from and expert. As far as the co-work space, what a neat idea. I won’t have a handle on my workspace needs until the board of the lobstermen’s association decides on my hours and duties July 7th. I’ll let you know then if its something I want to pursue.
