Ponderings of a Scientist

moderately useless musings on the World as I see it

Quotable Tidbits

The fewer people that vote in elections the more divide our country becomes.  Moderates are most apethetic to voting and radicals are most active.

All sources are biased.  We need to stop teaching students “both sides of each story”, or rather not teaching them at all, when only one side can be presented.  Rather, to best prepare our nation for the digital, participatory culture, we need to teach our students to understand inherent bias and how to make good decisions based on the nature of their sources.

Pregnancy is not a disability, however some accomodations are necessary.  Many working women are afraid to ask for such accomodations, however, as they don’t want to be perceived as less than equal to working men.

Can’t we be equal, but different?

By becoming full-time working out-of-the-house contributors to society, women have inadvertently devalued stay-at-home work.

I agree with teach kids to critically judge sources. This is an invaluable skill because everyone has an agenda and this is evident in almost all writing and news. But I think one big problem with teaching critical thinking is that it is a small step from questioning the ideas/values in a book to questioning the ideas/values of the teacher. Some teachers are frighten of loosing their authority over the students and so teach as if they know all the truths.

Like I said before I think that equal but different sounds too much like separate but equal, which was just a catch phrase used to justify discrimination. I’m pretty sure there is not an easy solution to this. I think companies need to be much more understanding that employees have lives and needs outside of work, and try to accommodate those needs.

Oh, and I added the ability for people to get e-mails when comments are added (like nikki’s blog).
