 Closer… closer… closer

July 17, 2006 at 9:36 am  |  work, politics, books/reading, rant

Pounce!

First off, I’d like to say KP is crazy. Second off, I’d like to say that Mondays are not fun.

Third.

Heidi and I had an interesting but relaxing weekend.

  • Friday, we were approved for a mortgage, went out to Kelly’s to sit outside, then watched the Redsox game/were guitar heroes at the doubleJs.
  • Saturday, I volunteered* scanning photographs at one of the 20 or so member libraries left in the country while Heidi went to the beach. We went grocery shopping and then I messed around with the blog while Heidi worked her 3rd job.
  • Sunday, was relaxing. We hung out in the morning then went to Portsmouth to have beers on the water and wandering around. (It is cooler by the water) This is probably where we’d end up moving so we thought we might as well get to know the place better. Then we had dinner, followed by the bookstore. I read through a few chapters of ‘Apathy and other small victories‘. I had so say I was amused by it. It was the little things, like how the author described how to sign ’shit’ (why are all online ASL dictionaries censored?) and how the main character steals saltshakers. I’ve not finished it, though I might pick it up (or just read it at the book store as it’s not at the library) but I’d recommend at least the first 3 chapters.

Apathy

At some point during the weekend I read through Newsweek. Now I don’t really think of Newsweek as a hard-hitting investigative rag but I was amused by the choice of articles and their layout. The cover article was Green America, which focused on what individuals and companies were doing to help the environment (and, more importantly, save money). This was a feel good, a ‘we can do it’, an ‘ain’t the American Entrepreneurial Spirit great?’ article. This was followed by a brief article bashing the US for not having greenhouse gas regulations or offering incentives for conservations; things that would stop our dependency on foreign oil and make us safer (i.e. stop wasting money on a unwinable war and put some if, not all, of that 100+ Billion a year into developing our energy infrastructure). It was a pretty good article and not something I’d expect from a magazine that devotes 10 pages to some guy talking about classic rock. (They also sort of call Bush a hypocrite…)

*I can’t say that I’m really one for volunteering. I usually just don’t care but I think that this could be good for me, and not just to put on my resume. I really don’t know much about libraries having never really worked in one so any experience will be good, plus getting a job is all about knowing someone who knows someone. It seems pretty much impossible to get a job just by applying.

 Awkward Hug

June 21, 2006 at 1:53 pm  |  work, sports, politics, technology

So I finished the last supervising class (the one I told you about before. I setup trackbacks to them but I’m not really sure what that does). The morning of the last session we had presentations on the FMLA and the ADA. I pretty sure the most useful thing I found out was that voyeurism, pyromania and kleptomania are not recognized disabilities. Now I can finally fire that pervert without worries. After a fairly nice lunch we were all required to make a 3 minute presentation. I panicked and brought mine to an abrupt end, fleeing the stage in tears. Sigh. You’d think I’d have gotten better at that sort of thing. It all ended with an awkward hug, which was given to me (and everyone else) by the lead presenter when we were presented with our certificates. As a plus I was rewarded with a nice new mug (picture below). After my ride in I rewarded myself with a nice warm mug of freshly made (bad) coffee topped with excessive amounts of whipped cream. Ah.

Now, I ended up riding my bike into work today because we needed to get the wire that connects the gas tank cover (in the back of the car) to the lever (in the front of the car) replaced or fixed. (This will probably take the mechanics 30 or possibly 45 seconds to do and we’ll probably get charged for 2 hours of work) I packed up a bag and had a nice slow ride in. The weather was gorgeous. I mean really nice. Well the only issue is that I forgot my god damned sandals at home! Now I get to sit around until the guy with the bag full of sandals shows up to work. I figure I can buy a pair off of him and leave them in my office for emergencies.

I’m glad that I did not buy MLBTV as it would have been a waste of $80. We get just basic (really basic) cable because we don’t feel that spending $40 more dollars a month for shit we wont watch just to get NESN, ESPN, and a few others is worth while. I had thought about picking up MLBTV and some hardware and just stream the games to our TV from the Internet via our computer. Problem solved! Money saved! We never ended up doing this (because I’m lazy) and it turns out that’s a good thing because I’m in the home market of the Red Sox and MLBTV would have blacked out all Red Sox games. MLB you are dumb fucks.

Ah, my sandal dealer has arrived. Now my day can begin.

[I’m glad I saved this post in a text doc as Eponym decided not to save my post. Jerks.]

 Headache

June 6, 2006 at 1:08 pm  |  work, sports

For some reason my head and ear ache this morning (my right if you must know). I’ve drank some water and taken some Advil but to no avail. Normally, I’d say ‘fine, I’ll just struggle through today, go home and be a bum tonight’ but we have another softball game tonight, so I guess I need to suck it up and try not to feel crappy. Last night’s hockey game was a little rough, but hopefully our team will figure out how to play together and everything will end up okay. The score was 4-1 them. I had a pretty good game but I don’t I was getting back fast enough helping out the D.. Skate harder! Someone had their first goal last night but I will not say who (don’t want to steal any thunder!).

I’m going to try to have a positive attitude today. I think there is something in ‘pretending everything is okay makes everything okay’ idea. Stupid work. Great off to a great start!

 Oh Crab Apples!

What does that mean? Is anyone there? So some good news and some bad.

  1. I just got a job offer.
  2. The pay was only $13/hr plus benefits. (I might as well teach school.)
  3. Hockey starts on Monday (Grue is playing in place of Ack ).
  4. Softball started yesterday (we won).
  5. Our centerfielder has moved to D.C.
  6. I have an interview at a very cool place.
  7. It’s only a part-time job (20hrs/wk).
  8. I’ve starting using excessive amount of emoticons.
  9. Store 24 has lost power and I don’t have cash to buy beer.

Enough of that. This is a small computer. At work I’ve been playing with PHP, SQL, Javascript, XML and XSLT to create something that probably doesn’t need to be done (or if it does it should probably be done in a way other than how I’m doing it, so that everything is more modular). I have pretty much no idea what I am doing but I figure you have to learn some way. And, besides, I may end up needing these skills in some future job (or if I end up making my own site… assuming my hiatus has not chased all my fans away). Maybe I should start posting useful or interesting stuff I find? But who would care besides me? I could probably use something like del.icio.us (or better yet del.icio.us direc.tor as it is faster cooler somethinger). I have no idea.

It kind of stinks that the projects I’ve been working on for years (on and off) at the Lab are pretty much done or are going to be replaced, so there is no reason to keep working on them. I need to work on projects. I need to make things work better. I am just having a problem caring right now (damn you Ack and your leaving). I’m sure it’ll pass… but I want to move on. I hope the interview I have goes well (though me working in Boston could be problematic, but it is a good opportunity… time will tell). I’ll stop now as I have nothing else to add.

 Let the testing begin!

Alright, so let see how much people like me this month. I should be doing work right now but my God am I apathetic today. Gwargh. I try to write some more tonight while I’m looking and apply to other jobs. Oh, and I don’t think that I can pay off my student loans on $13/hr, so it looks like I am stuck here for now. Congratulations Fuck you Ack on your new job for getting to leave first. I started here 3 months before you did so doesn’t that mean I should have left 3 months before you?!

And my fortune for today: You are about to become $8.95 poorer ($6.95 if you had the buffet)

Crap.

 Interview-tastic

May 12, 2006 at 7:09 pm  |  work, games, rant

Damn you Al! Just in case you were wondering why I did not go out to lunch with you today (that is Friday) I was at an interview. I think it went pretty well though I think I bombed the typing skill section. My fingers moved like molasses… but all in all I think it went pretty well. The guy I interviewed with seems like my type of person; he was twitching his leg so much the whole table was shaking. Ha! This is the same place that had this on their job application website and the place seems pretty chill. The benefits seem pretty good but I do not think the pay will be that great. One must wait and see. Now I am applying for some new jobs instead of going to work. I just can’t bring myself to go, so the weekend starts right now.

The following are things you might find neat:

Apparently I am a Nintendo fanboy.

Trying to cram 5 days of work into 2 is difficult. We moved stuff on Monday, I was at my supervising course on Tuesday, and I will be out most, if not all of Friday. Right now, I trying to make sure I get everything that ‘needs’ to get done done. But how do you prioritize? In case you didn’t know, Republicans are stupid and irresponsible. The current book I’m reading is making me sensitive towards socially biased and fiscal stupid legislation. This is what this says to me:

Rich man says, “Fuck you ‘poor’ people and fuck your children too.”

And by poor I mean those people who make less than 6 figures. Stupid poor people.

 Drunken Goat

May 5, 2006 at 12:40 pm  |  food/drink, work, technology

I picked up some fish last night for dinner (canuckian aquaculture not wild Alaskian salamon but I tried) and there it was, Drunken Goat cheese. The only thing that keep me from getting it was the goat part but maybe, just maybe the wine makes in good! I think we should soak more things in wine or beer.

As it is Cinco de Mayo, I will be celebrating my Mexican heritage by drinking beer at a bar while listening to Famous (who are thoroughly Mexican). What could be better.

This weekend we’ll be traveling down to southern Mass/Cape Cod to visit some of Heidi’s family.

On a side note, apparently Honda does not expect to release a mass-market fuel cell car till 2026 or so. So, if you were looking for that as a solution for our high gas prices, it’ll be a long time coming.

I have an interview next Friday. I’m not sure what the job is exactly (writing abstracts I think) but I know it’ll pay 7 to 12 thousand dollars less than what I am making now. Maybe.

Wow, has this post been disjointed.

 I should have done…

April 21, 2006 at 3:01 pm  |  work, sports, books/reading

Last night was nice and relaxing (minus the laundry but I somehow got out of folding it). We sat around on the couch and read, which is something I haven’t done enough of lately, maybe because I keep trying to read books that make me fall asleep. Currently I am reading a mildly insane book about a well-equiped reincarnated (cloned?) messiah type figure with pyschic power and no memory lost in a futuristic dystopian. Very snow crash-esque. I takes amusing jabs at the Christian Crazies Right and social stereo-types, and, as a bonus, I really have no idea how it will end.

I should have spent part of last night applying for jobs. I have a list of them but reading and playing brain age completely distracted me. Crap. Maybe I should just do that now…

Sunday is the Muddy Moose. I should be painful though not as painful as last year. Look at the mud! [more photos]

Me at last year’s race. Why am I smiling?

(1) Not have a broken flag. Example, one of the guys here at work add the following feature. His code spits out ‘I am so SMRT. I am so SMRT.’, ad naseum, when you press the ‘C’ button; this keeps happening until you reset the board. Awesome.

(2) Not set the broken flag by default. I’m testing a pile of shit! Damn it! Fuck, fuck, fuck!

Now that that is out of the way. If it interests you check out this article on why the DMCA is a bad, bad man. It’s not too long and it gives lots of examples! Up with Fair Use!

I road my bike into work today but I forgot lunch! I figured I could just get something from the Cafe downstairs but apparently the fucker’s get the day off. While I do not particularly care to celebrate the cruxification of anyone, I would like a day off. Heck I can even take of a day to celebrate someone else’s martyrdom. How about June 6th? The day Debs was sent to prison for violating the Sedition Act of 1918. Or maybe November 5th, it’s Guy Fawkes day and Debs’ birthday! (The Sedition Act is a pretty scary part of our history! You should read it.) Rant aside, Ack and I went to the store and picked up food, some of which, I will now eat.

If you have gmail check out their online calendar thing. I’ve not played with it that much but it has potential! You can make you calendar public or share with certain people and you can subscribe to other people’s calendars! I can’t keep track of what is going on around me so if you people can do it for me that’d be nice.
