 Symbolisms

December 17, 2006 at 11:37 am  |  home, religion, politics, photos, rant

Two weeks ago I was feeling a bit down… not really sure if I remember why or if I knew why at the time.  The Scientist tried to make me feel better by going and getting a Christmas Tree.  I’m not sure if it worked at the time but it does make the living room smell nice.  According to History.com “… as late as the 1840s Christmas trees were seen as pagan symbols and not accepted by most Americans.”  I also find some amusement pointing out hypocrisies.  Anyway, here is our tree:

On another note, when we moved into our new place we inherited a Flag.  This is nice, I suppose, but it is in poor condition and I don’t want the flag police to write me up (in a newspaper article).  All I can say is it is a good thing those crazy senators didn’t pass that flag burning desecration amendment, because, according to the Flag Keeper’s website, “The U.S. Flag Code states, ‘The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning’.”  Now I’m sure the legislation was intended to stop people from destroying our flags (with malicious intent) but it might have interfered with people trying to destroy our flags (with a patriotic intent).  Can you really have different punishments for the same action, where the only difference is intent?  Our Flag:

  1. That flag looks okay. It`s supposed to be see-through, right? One of those translucent flags?

  2. Nice tree. We didn’t put up a tree this year but did do the outdoor light thing for the first time in years.
I wanted to do something different. We have some ornaments which were gifted to you. We could bring them by you.
Recycle is our way, don’t throw out, give it to the kids, let them throw it out.

Potato salad? Transparent flags? The bad air must be getting to Dan or he has started dreaming in Japanese.

  3. The flag is not supposed to be transparent… it’s just really worn, hence the need to put it to the torch. I wonder if using to cook hot dogs is a dignified method?

  4. If you haven’t already toasted your flag on the grill, you should: 1. either buy a new flag to replace it, or not display a flag. 2. Separate the stars from the stripes…with a knife, or your sharp, sharp teeth and 3. Burn away. Preferrably wait until the 4th of July, and cook it on the grill…burgers smoked with patriotism, hot dogs soaked in liberty!!

  6. I was going to just take it down… I’m too lazy, cheap and unpatriotic to replace it. Because of my first condition, however, the flag is still up (the wind has wrapped it around the pole several times… I think me leaving it up is probably a bigger slight than any flag burning I could do). Can we call the hot dogs liberty wienies? Why separate the stars from the strips? Does that have something to do with wanting to kick out the original colonies? If so, fuck you west coast boy! Viva la… me?
